Between 80 to 90 per cent of coal produced in British Columbia is metallurgical coal, which is used in the production of steel from iron ore. The province also produces some thermal coal. Most BC coal is exported internationally via coal ports on the west coast near Vancouver and Prince Rupert.

Production at the mine was temporarily suspended in August 2010 following a strike initiated by the United Mineworkers of America to replace the labour agreement that expired on 31 December 2009.

It comes at a time when public awareness is growing over coal exports, the role coal plays in global warming, and the port''s procedure in approving the expansions inhouse. Neptune proposes doubling its capacity from million tonnes of coal a year to million tonnes.
Taken together these expansions mean British Columbia will shortly have a coal export capacity of million tonnes. This is a far cry from the usual average of 25 million tonnes. It is worth stepping back for a moment to consider the impact these new coal mines, railways and ports will have on the province.
